HOUSTON, June 25
-- A unit of MOL Hungarian Oil & Gas PLC encountered mechanical problems when testing and evaluating the Bijeel-1 exploratory well in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The problems necessitated a sidetrack and redrill of the lower portion of the well, which is expected to take as long as 8 weeks, said partner Gulf Keystone Petroleum Ltd.

This will delay the drilling of the Shaikan-2 appraisal/exploration well, which is to use the same rig.

The Bijeel-1 exploration well has provided water pressure data which, when taken with data from other wells in the area, have favorable implications for the Shaikan structure, Gulf Keystene said.

The data would appear to support the concept of a regional aquifer underlying the Shaikan structure and that the hydrocarbon-water contacts in each reservoir are substantially deeper than the lowest known hydrocarbon depths, as determined from log data.
