Woodside let a deepwater drilling contract to Transocean for the Trion deepwater field in the Gulf of Mexico (OGJ Online, June 20, 2023).
Transocean’s Deepwater Thalassa drillship is currently under contract to Shell but will be under contract to Woodside starting March 2026 and running to March 2029, as confirmed on Transocean's website and a project update from Woodside on Apr. 30. Woodside said the project is on track for first oil in 2028.
Trion field is about 180 km off the Mexican coast in 2,500 m of water and was discovered by Mexican national oil company PEMEX in 2012. A floating production unit is currently under construction.
