Woodside Energy started drilling at Trion oil field in ultradeep waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The campaign includes the execution of 24 subsea wells which will be connected to the 100,000-b/d Tláloc floating production unit (FPU).

The development incorporates associated subsea infrastructure and export systems. Production from Trion will be loaded into the 950,000-bbl Chalchi floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit.

The wells will be drilled by Transocean’s Deepwater Thalassa dual-activity drillship, supported by supply vessels and logistics services operating from ports in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The drillship arrived in Mexican waters on Mar. 5, 2026.

Since the final investment decision (FID) was made, engineering, procurement, and operational planning activities have progressed in line with the approved development schedule. The project remains on track to achieve first oil in 2028.

Trion is a greenfield development that would represent the first oil production from Mexico’s deepwater. The field lies about 30 km south of the US-Mexico border and 180 km from the Mexican coastline in the Perdido Fold Belt, at a water depth of 2,600 m. The development is targeting 479 MMboe of best estimate (2C) contingent oil and gas

Woodside is operator at Trion (60%) with partner PEMEX Exploración y Producción (40%).
