Europa Oil & Gas (Holdings) PLC, Abingdon, UK, has received an 8-year license to explore a 11,228-sq-km area in deep water of the Agadir Basin offshore Morocco.

Exploration will focus on the Lower Cretaceous fan sand play productive in West Africa.

The license area is in 600-2,000 m of water.

In the first 2 years of the license, Europa will reprocess 1,300 sq km of 3D seismic data and conduct other technical studies.

It then will have the option to commit to drill an exploration well or relinquish the license.

Europa said only 10 wells have drilled in deepwater Morocco, three of which have penetrated the complete Lower Cretaceous section.

Europa will hold 75% of the Inezgane Permit on receipt of the formal letter of award from the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, which will hold 25%.
