Qatar Petroleum has awarded a lump-sum engineering, procurement, and construction contract to Samsung C&T Corp. for expansion of LNG storage and loading within Ras Laffan Industrial City as part of the North Field East project.

Qatar Petroleum (QP) has awarded a lump-sum engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to Samsung C&T Corp. for expansion of LNG storage and loading within Ras Laffan Industrial City as part of the North Field East (NFE) project. Contract scope includes three LNG tanks and three LNG loading berths for NFE, and options for two LNG tanks and one LNG berth for the future North Field South (NFS) project, and all associated pipes, lines, and loading lines.

The contract is the second major onshore EPC award for NFE. Last month QP awarded the EPC contract for the construction of four LNG trains with associated infrastructure to a Chiyoda-Technip joint venture (OGJ Online, Feb. 8, 2021).

Both contracts represent the culmination of front-end engineering and design work that began in early 2018. When completed, NFE will increase Qatar’s LNG production to 110 million tonnes/year (tpy) from 77 million tpy. NFS, the second phase of the planned LNG expansion, will further increase production to 126 million tpy by 2027.

The new contract is valued at more than $2 billion, including the NFS options.
