QatarEnergy awards Saipem latest North Field EPCI contract
QatarEnergy LNG has awarded Saipem, in partnership with Offshore Oil Engineering Co. Ltd., an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contract for the COMP5 package of the North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) offshore compression complexes project. Offshore installation will be carried out 2029-30 by Saipem's De He construction vessel.
The contract comprises completion of two compression complexes, each including a compression platform, a living-quarters platform, a flare platform supporting the gas combustion system, and related interconnecting bridges. Each complex will have a total weight of about 68,000 tons.
The overall value of the contract is about $4 billion and Saipem’s share amounts to roughly $3.1 billion. It follows the EPCI COMP2 and COMP3 packages, awarded to Saipem and disclosed to the market in October 2022 and September 2024 respectively, which are currently under execution.
Technip Energies won COMP4, also covering two offshore compression complexes, in April 2025.
NFPS is part of QatarEnergy LNG's efforts to maintain and increase the production capacity of North Field, the world's largest non-associated natural gas field, located off the northeast coast of Qatar. QatarEnergy claims recoverable North Field reserves of 900 tcf, with Oil & Gas Journal estimating the country’s total proved reserves at 842.6 tcf. The country produces roughly 6 tcf/year according to the US Energy Information Administration.
