Strike Energy Ltd. has spudded appraisal well Walyering-5 (W5) in Perth basin offshore Australia to recommence development of Walyering wet-gas field, which stalled under previous ownership after initial successful exploration and appraisal outcomes.

The well will be drilled to a depth of 3,138 m subsea (ss) and is designed to test the updip potential of the discovery. The well has been drilled to a depth of 483 m and Strike will drill ahead to the first casing point at about 1,010 m before running and cementing 13-3/8 in. casing in place.

The Walyering conventional gas discovery was made in the Jurassic Cattamarra Coal Measures (at about 3,165 m ss), via the Walyering-1 well which flowed at 13.5 MMcfd and measured only 1% CO₂ from the A-Sand (OGJ Online, Aug. 27, 2021).

The field lies between Western Australia’s two major gas transmission lines, linking the field with industrial gas markets.

Exploration permit EP447, which includes Walyering, covers 1,110 sq km. Strike Energy is operator of the permit (55%) with joint venture partner Talon Energy Co. (45%).
