Baker Hughes: US rig unchanged at 790 units

The US drilling rig count was unchanged at 790 rigs working for the week ended Feb. 14, according to Baker Hughes data. The count down 261 units from the 1051 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land decreased by 1 unit week-over-week to a total of 766 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters increased by a single rig—the only rig drilling in inland waters for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore remained unchanged at 23.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 2 from the week prior to reach 678 units. This time a year ago, 857 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas decreased by 1 unit to reach 110 rigs, which was 84 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest jump in rigs. With 397 rigs running, the count is 3 more than were drilling last week.

With a single-unit increase, New Mexico saw the only other gain in the group for the week to reach 113 rigs running.

Eight states remained unchanged this week, namely Louisiana, 52; North Dakota, 52; Oklahoma, 50; Colorado, 22; California, 14; West Virginia, 14; Ohio, 11; and Utah, 6.

Pennsylvania, Wyoming, and Alaska each dropped a single rig to reach 24, 22, and 9 rigs running, respectively.

Canada’s rig count decreased by 2 units for the week. At 255 rigs, the count is 31 more than the 224 units drilling this week a year ago. With 172 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs gained 5 units this week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada decreased by 7 units to reach 83.
