The rig count in Canada gained 24 rigs to reach 138 working for the week, according to Baker Hughes data. The weekly total is down 22 units from the 160 rigs working this time a year ago. The rise is largely attributable to oil-directed rigs, which increased by 22 to reach a count of 91. Gas rigs increased by 2 to 47.
In the US, a 4-rig drop brought the rig count to 555 for the week. The count is down from the 590 rigs running in the US this time last year.
US oil-directed rigs decreased by 3 units to 439 and decreased by 49 from this time in 2024. Gas-directed rigs decreased by 1 unit to 113. A year ago, 98 units were drilling for gas in the US.
The number of rigs drilling on land in the US was down 1 unit to 543, which is 26 fewer than this time last year. Horizontal rigs decreased by 3 units to 502. Vertical rigs decreased by 1 unit to reach 12 for the week. The number of rigs drilling directionally was unchanged at 41.
Texas saw the largest decrease in rigs. With a 2-unit decrease, the count stands at 262 for the week. New Mexico and Oklahoma each dropped a single unit to end the week with respective counts of 90 and 49.
Offshore units were down by 3 to 10, which includes the 9 rigs running in the US Gulf of Mexico, the same as last week.
