Glenfarne Group LLC has completed acquisition of the planned 8-million tonne/year (tpy) Magnolia LNG liquefaction plant near Lake Charles, La. The transaction includes Magnolia LNG’s patented optimized single mixed refrigeration (OSMR) liquefaction technology.

Magnolia LNG has completed US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) permitting. The 115-acre project site has a long-term lease option agreement in place with the Lake Charles harbor and terminal district. Magnolia LNG is permitted to receive natural gas through the existing 2.2-bcfd Kinder Morgan Louisiana Pipeline, and will pretreat, liquefy, and store LNG onsite for domestic use and export.

Magnolia LNG was previously owned by Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd. (LNGL), which is completing corporate restructuring. LNGL in May 2020 sold Magnolia to Global Energy Megatrend Ltd. (OGJ Online, May 12, 2020), but that deal fell through. LNGL had planned to complete construction in 2024.

Glenfarne also owns the 4-million tpy Texas LNG project in Brownsville, Tex. FERC approved Texas LNG in 2019 (OGJ Online, Nov. 12, 2019).
