The US Department of Energy announced as much as $26 million in financial assistance for cost-shared research and development projects through its Fossil Energy Office. Selected projects will study ways to reduce both costs and emissions for both coal and natural gas-fired power plants under DOE’s Carbon Capture Program.

DOE said funding will focus on two main areas:

• Development of Novel Transformational Materials and Processes, such as novel water-lean solvents and other materials which can significantly increase carbon dioxide absorption performance, economics, and other benefits.

• Enabling Technologies to Improve Carbon Capture Systems, which will support research to develop technologies benefiting developers overall.

DOE said that the projects will be managed by its National Energy Technology Laboratory.
