LONDON, Dec. 18 -- OMV AG and the Slovakian oil and gas company Nafta AS will shoot seismic over a 1,400 sq km exploration license in the Slovak part of the Vienna basin in 2008.

The program for two licenses is the beginning of a 50:50 E&P partnership in Slovakia. The companies will explore Vienna basin's geologically complex calcareous alpine units, a third of which is in Slovakia. "Initially, geological studies and seismic studies will be carried out; exploration wells are planned for the following 2 years," OMV said.

The parties say they are committed to Central and Eastern Europe as a core exploration region, and OMV executive Helmut Langanger, responsible for exploration and production, said the acreage was attractive because there is a "very high" possibility of making other discoveries.
