OMV begins production from Wittau gas field in Austria

Production follows the 2023 discovery, one of Austria's largest in four decades. Once fully developed, Wittau is expected to double OMV's gas production in the country.

OMV began gas production from Wittau field, Austria.

About 1 billion std cu m of gas will be developed in the first phase.

Wittau is one of the largest gas discoveries in Austria in the past 40 years.

OMV has started production from Wittau gas field onshore Austria.

Production startup, which began in this year's second quarter, is expected to supply gas for the winter 2026-27 season, the company said. The final investment decision to develop the discovery was made in early 2025.

In the first phase of the Wittau project, 11 Tw-hr of gas will be developed (about 1 billion std cu m). Project investment of about EUR 150 million included about EUR 70 million for drilling and EUR 80 million for infrastructure and equipment.

Once fully developed, Wittau is expected to double OMV’s gas production in Austria. The field is expected to contain potential recoverable resources of 48 Tw-hr (roughly 4.2 billion std cu m or 28 MMboe).

The field, discovered in 2023, is one of the largest gas discoveries in Austria in the past 40 years.
