CNOOC Ltd. has commissioned China's first offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration project.

CNOOC Ltd. has commissioned China's first offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration project, the operator said in a release May 31.

The project is supplementary to development of Enping 15-1 oil field. Enping 15-1, in the Pearl River Mouth basin about 190 km southwest of Hong Kong in average water depth of 80 m, holds large levels of CO2, the company said.

The CCS module can capture, process, and inject CO2 produced from the field into the saline water layer at a depth of about 800 m under the seabed. The project can store over 1.5 million tons of CO2, the operator said.
