MOL Norge hits dry hole in North Sea
MOL Norge AS will plug a North Sea well in production license 617. Well 2/9-6 S, the first exploration well in the license, is classified as dry (OGJ Online, Dec. 4, 2020).
The well was drilled by the Maersk Integrator drilling rig on the west side of Mandal High, about 9 km north of the Norwegian-Danish border and 280 km southwest of Stavanger, in 70 m water. The well was drilled to vertical and measured depths of 4,250 and 4,274 m subsea, respectively, and was terminated in the Farsund formation of the Upper Jurassic.
The objective was to prove petroleum in Upper Jurassic reservoir rocks in the Mandal formation. The well encountered a 250 m thick sandstone layer with clay stone elements. About 140 m were reservoir rocks with poor to moderate reservoir properties. Traces of petroleum were registered in the upper part of the reservoir. Extensive data acquisition and sampling have been carried out.
The Maersk Integrator will now drill production wells on Tambar field in PL 065 in the southern North Sea, where Aker BP ASA is operator.
MOL Norge AS is operator of PL 617 (40%) with partners OMV (Norge) AS (30%) and Wintershall DEA Norge AS (30%).
