Baker Hughes: US rig count nearly flat

US drilling activity remained relatively flat, with 762 rotary rigs working during the week ended Aug. 19, down 1 from the previous week but up 256 from the same period a year ago, Baker Hughes reported Friday.

US drilling activity remained relatively flat, with 762 rotary rigs working during the week ended Aug. 19, down 1 from the previous week but up 256 from the same period a year ago, Baker Hughes reported Friday.

One fewer rig was drilling on land this week to hit 741 rigs working. Inland water activity was unchanged at 3 rigs, as was activity offshore with 18 rigs running. Sixteen rigs were working in the Gulf of Mexico this week, unchanged form the week prior.

Of the US rigs working, 601 were drilling for oil, unchanged from last week, while one fewer rig was drilling for gas, leaving the count at 159 for the week.

New Mexico's rig count was up 2 to 106. Texas dropped 3 rigs for the week to 369 rigs working.

Drilling activity in Canada remained unchanged at 201 rigs running, but up 45 from the 156 rigs running this time a year ago.
