International Frontier Resources reported plans for a horizontal well on the Tecolutla block in the Mexican state of Veracruz after production increased throughout an extended production test of its TEC-10 well. It expects its Tonalli Energia joint venture to spud the horizontal well, TEC-11, late in the fourth quarter in the northern extension of the block.

International Frontier Resources Corp., Calgary, reported plans for a horizontal well on the Tecolutla block in the Mexican state of Veracruz after production increased throughout an extended production test of its TEC-10 well (OGJ Online, May 8, 2018).

It expects its Tonalli Energia joint venture to spud the horizontal well, TEC-11, late in the fourth quarter in the northern extension of the block. The well will target a part of the Cretaceous El Abra reef not yet accessed due to surface conditions.

In the southwestern portion of the block, Tonalli has shut in the TEC-10 well to record pressure data to be used for development and will resume production testing after 2-3 weeks.

The well flowed more than 175 b/d of oil from El Abra at the end of the 18-day test. During the test’s last 72 hr, the well flowed 154 b/d of oil and 300 b/d of total fluids.

Throughout the test period, the well maintained a consistent flow rate of 285-315 b/d of formation fluid through a 12/64-in. surface choke.

Flowing wellhead pressure increased from 260 psi on July 23 to more than 900 psi at the end of the test on Aug. 6.

International Frontier said initial bottom-hole pressure data indicate production capacity of the TEC-10 well is “significantly higher than the restricted flow rates observed during the extended testing operation.”

The company’s Tonalli partner is Mexican petrochemical company Grupo IDESA.
