Nord Stream 2 has begun gas fill of its 27.5-billion cu m/year (bcmy) first string. This string will be gradually filled to build required inventory and pressure as a prerequisite for later technical tests.

Pre-commissioning integrity testing already occurred, including automated internal inspection and external visual and instrumental surveys. Pre-commissioning of the second string, also 27.5-bcmy, is ongoing.

PJSC Gazprom finished building Nord Stream 2 last month (OGJ Online, Sept. 10, 2021). It runs 1,230 km (764 miles) along the Baltic Sea bed and will transport natural gas from Russia to Germany. It follows largely the same route as Nord Stream 1, operating since November 2011.

Uniper SE, Wintershall DEA, OMV Group, Engie SA, and Royal Dutch Shell PLC are Gazprom’s Nord Stream 2 project partners.
