Venture Global withdraws Delta LNG from pre-filing to focus on Plaquemines expansion

In a letter to FERC June 10, the company said, “pursuing the Delta LNG project at this particular time would not be the best use of its corporate resources or the resources of the Commission’s staff,” choosing instead to focus on its Plaquemines Expansion project.

Venture Global LNG Inc. has withdrawn the Delta LNG project from the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) pre-filing review process.

In a letter to FERC June 10, the company said, “pursuing the Delta LNG project at this particular time would not be the best use of its corporate resources or the resources of the Commission’s staff,” choosing instead to focus on its Plaquemines Expansion project.

The proposed 24.4 million tonnes/year (tpy) Delta LNG terminal was slated for a 1,100-acre site, near Mile 54 of the Mississippi River, south of New Orleans, La. The Delta Express Pipeline was to connect the terminal with natural gas pipeline interconnections.

Venture Global received approval from Commission staff on Apr. 30, 2019, to begin the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) pre-filing review process for the proposed LNG export and related gas pipeline project, the request for which had been filed on Apr. 17, 2019.

Plaquemines Expansion project

As noted in its letter to the Commission, Venture Global instead plans to focus efforts in Plaquemines Parish, La., on its proposed Plaquemines Expansion project.

The project, which was accepted into the Commission’s pre-filing review process on Apr. 4, 2025, upon completion, is expected to produce about the same amount of LNG as the proposed Delta LNG project, but on a faster schedule, Venture Global noted.

The 20-million tpy Plaquemines LNG plant, the company’s second, achieved first production of LNG in December 2024 (OGJ Online, Dec. 16, 2024; Dec. 27, 2024).
