AMOCO GAUGES GULF OF SUEZ DISCOVERY
Amoco Egypt Oil Co. this month is to begin delineating an oil and gas strike in the Gulf of Suez defined by 3D seismic data.
Amoco Egypt's GS 184 2 wildcat flowed 5,500 b/d of 38 gravity oil and 5.9 MMcfd of gas through a 2 1/8 in. opening at surface from 181 ft of perforations in Miocene Asl strata at 10,982 11,282 ft.
Amoco has 100% interest in the discovery well, located in the gulf about 2 miles west of Egypt's October field, a 1977 Amoco discovery.
Amoco Egypt Pres. Charles Pitman said the GS 184 2 discovery is a direct result of a 290 sq mile Amoco 3D seismic survey of the area that included complete coverage of October field.
"The new 3 D seismic data allowed us to locate the new oil resources and also to identify several other prospects in the area we were not able to map using traditional 2 D seismic data," Pitman said.
Gulf of Suez Petroleum Co., a joint company of Amoco Egypt and Egyptian General Petroleum Corp., is to operate the discovery. Amoco Egypt said production from the new field can be started quickly by using October field facilities.
