Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC, formally applied Oct. 23 to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for authorization to build the MVP Boost project.

EQT Corp., in a release the same day, said the request is “in response to growing demand for more capacity” on the 303-mile interstate Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) Mainline system, and that the project “is designed to provide timely, cost-effective access to the growing demand for natural gas for use by local distribution companies, industrial users, and power generation in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States.”

MVP Boost would add compression at three existing compressor stations in West Virginia and add a new compressor station in Virginia.

Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC, a joint venture comprised of affiliates of EQT Corp., NextEra Energy Inc., Consolidated Edison Inc., AltaGas Ltd., and RGC Resources Inc., would construct and own the proposed project.

EQT, as operator of the MVP Mainline, would operate the proposed project's infrastructure.

As proposed, and pending regulatory approval, construction of the MVP Boost infrastructure is targeted to start in the winter of 2026-2027, with a full in-service date targeted for mid-2028.

The MVP Mainline, a natural gas transmission pipeline system that spans from Wetzel County, WV, to Pittsylvania County, Va., entered operation in June 2024 and achieved its full operational capacity of 2 bcfd of natural gas in January 2025.

In June and July 2025, Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC conducted an open season to gauge shipper interest in MVP Boost, which was initially anticipated to increase capacity on the MVP Mainline by 500,000 dekatherms/day.

The MVP Boost open season received over 1 bcfd of shipper interest from investment grade counterparties, leading Mountain Valley Pipeline, LLC to increase the additional capacity provided through MVP Boost to 600,000 dekatherms/day.
