Umbilical contract let for Gorgon-Jansz-Io project

MELBOURNE, Mar. 30 -- Aker Solutions of Norway has been awarded a $100 million (Aus.) contract to supply subsea umbilicals and associated equipment for the Chevron Australia group’s Gorgon-Jansz-Io gas project off Western Australia.

Aker will supply 264 km of steel tube umbilicals to connect the project’s subsea production system to the onshore LNG and natural gas plants to be built on Barrow Island.

Engineering work for the umbilicals will take place in Oslo and Perth. Manufacturing will take place at Aker’s facility in Moss, Norway.

Final deliveries are timed for second-quarter 2012.

The contract is one of the largest for umbilicals ever awarded.

The Gorgon-Jansz-Io project will produce 15 million tonnes/year of LNG, which will be shipped directly from Barrow. It also will produce 300 TJ/day of gas to be delivered via a pipeline from Barrow to the mainland.

First LNG is scheduled for 2014 and first gas by the end of 2015.
