HOUSTON, July 9 -- Shell Exploration (China) Ltd. has awarded Kværner ASA a contract to provide front-end engineering design and detailed engineering for a gathering system for Changbei gas field in China.

The system will include gathering, processing, and transmission.

Kværner's Singapore office will work on the initial phase of project, which includes conceptual design work and a preparation of a cost estimate. It will be "extremely fast-track" with a 3-month schedule, officials said.

This phase of the project will form part of Shell's proposed development plan.

Following a final investment decision, the latter part of the work will be executed in Kværner's Beijing office and will comprise completion of the basic design/drawings, placing orders for the long lead items and finalizing the engineering procurement contract for the execution of the complete project.

Kværner's Beijing office also will assist with local procurement, logistics studies, and construction advice.
