BP PLC and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. have lost separate appeals to the US Supreme Court to overturn a lower-court decision expanding their financial responsibility for the April 2010 Macondo blowout and spill in the Gulf of Mexico (OGJ Online, May 22, 2014).

The high court rejected the companies’ petitions for review of a decision last year by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans denying their attempts to limit Clean Water Act fines imposed as a result of the accident.

The federal government seeks as much as $13.7 billion from BP and $1 billion from Anadarko.
