IPC Sudan Ltd., a unit of International Petroleum Corp. (IPC), Vancouver, B.C., signed an exploration and production-sharing agreement with Sudan on the 29,412-sq km Sudd area Block 5A in the interior of Sudan.

The block was previously operated by Chevron Corp. before it withdrew from Sudan in the mid-1980s amid civil disorder.

IPC also owns the Hailab and Delta Tocar concessions in northeastern Sudan.

Block 5A is adjacent to acreage held by State Petroleum Corp., a unit of Canada's Arakis Energy Corp., Calgary (OGJ, July 18, 1994, p. 21). The State Petroleum-Arakis group is currently developing Heglig and Unity fields (OGJ, Dec. 16, 1996, Newsletter).

A 1,500-km export pipeline is planned for completion in 1999.

The pipeline will extend from the Heglig field area to Port Sudan and have additional capacity available for third-parties, IPC said.

That will provide it with a viable export route to move any future production from Block 5A.

As part of its immediate exploration plans, IPC will conduct a 1,350-sq km seismic survey, planning to drill its first exploration well by yearend.
