Papua New Guinea project approved

Chevron Nuigini Pty. Ltd. has received government approval for Papua New Guinea's second export-oriented oil field development. Construction on the $440 million (Australian) Gobe oil field project is expected to begin immediately, with production to start in first quarter 1998 and average 40,000 b/d the first 3 years. Construction on the $440 million (Australian) Gobe oil field project is expected to begin immediately, with production to start in first quarter 1998 and average 40,000 b/d the first 3 years.

Involved are development of South East Gobe field on PPLs 161 and 56 and Gobe Main field on PPL 161. Gobe, 80 km southeast of Chevron's Kutubu oil field project, will be linked to the Kutubu export pipeline and Gulf of Papua terminal via a short spur line.
