West Australian Pty. Ltd. (Wapet) has started production from Cowle field off Western Australia.

Output from the 2.6 million bbl field will peak at 8,000 b/d. It is expected to have a 4 year life.

Cowle is being produced from an unmanned, one well, monopod platform in 43 ft of water. The well is a horizontal completion in a thin Cretaceous Barrow reservoir.

The 3,287 ft displacement is a record for Wapet, which used medium radius drilling the first time off Australia.

A 10 km subsea pipeline moves Cowle oil to Thevenard Island for processing, storage, and shipment.

Wapet, Perth, is operator with other interests held by Chevron Asiatic Ltd., Texaco Oil Development Co., Ampol Exploration Ltd., Shell Development (Australia) Ltd., and Western Mining Corp. Ltd.

Wapet recently started production from nearby Yammaderry oil field (OGJ, Apr. 1, p. 48). Combined cost of developing the two Carnarvon basin fields is about $30 million (Australian).
