CHEVRON ORDERS MORE DOUBLE HULLED TANKERS
Chevron Shipping Co. has ordered two more double hulled tankers.
Chevron signed a contract with Mitsui & Co. and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (IHI) for a 148,800 dwt tanker to be built in Japan for delivery in March 1993.
Chevron also signed a contract with Mitsui covering a 132,000 dwt tanker to be built in Rio De Janeiro for delivery in October 1993.
IHI's Brazilian affiliate Ishikawajima do Brasil Estaleiros SA (Ishibras) will build the latter vessel under a subcontract with Mitsui.
NEW DESIGNS
The tankers will incorporate Chevron's proprietary double hull tank design. That involves compartmentalizing the double hull space so as to mitigate problems with stability and buoyancy double hull designs may experience in an accident.
In addition, the two new vessels will incorporate an integrated bridge design concept. That entails clustering all navigational information instruments at a central location near steering and engine controls on the ship's bridge. In addition to providing immediate access to all information and controls needed for safe navigation, the new design will accommodate use of full featured electronic charts once they are commercially available. The tankers are the latest additions to Chevron's continuing fleet renewal program. Chevron ordered two double hulled tankers from Mitsui in June 1990 for construction by Ishibras in Brazil.
