The U.S. campaign to drill horizontal and high angle wells continues to spread to new horizons, fields, and basins.

Among recent action are projects planned or under way in Mississippi, Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and California.

All horizontal locations are exploratory wells unless indicated otherwise.

MISSISSIPPI

Coho Resources Inc., Houston, completed the first horizontal well in Soso field, Jasper County, Miss.

The 1 Soso H, 28-10n-13w, yielded on pump 360 b/d of 20.5 gravity oil and 28 b/d of water from 11 Cretaceous Washita-Fredricksburg perforations at 9,430-10,152 ft.

Total depth of the producer is 11,263 ft, and TVD is about 9,124 ft with an 833 ft lateral.

Coho drilled the horizontal well to try to cut the high oil-water ratio found in other Washita-Fredricksburg wells in Soso field, about 400-500 bbl of water for every 50-60 bbl of oil.

KENTUCKY

Touchstone Energy Co., Dallas, staked five horizontal exploratory and development tests to Cambro-Ordovician Knox dolomite in Monroe and Cumberland counties, South Central Kentucky.

The Monroe County test is 1 Graves, 2 1/2 miles north of Northwest Otia field and 5 miles northeast of Tompkinsville.

Touchstone expects Knox at 2,000 ft TVD and plans a 1,600 ft lateral.

The other four tests are in Cumberland County: 1 Junior Day, a wildcat about 5 miles northwest of Burkesville and 1 mile north of North Griner Consolidated field, which produces oil from Knox; and three wells in Northwest Kettle field, a Knox oil producing area south of Burkesville.

In these wells, Knox is expected at 2,000 ft TVD, and horizontal legs will be 1,330-2,000 ft.

AUSTIN CHALK WELLS
