BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. has let contract for a 3D seismic survey of a near shore area of the Beaufort Sea just off supergiant Prudhoe Bay oil field on Alaska's North Slope.

The contract went to the Northern Geophysical unit of 3-D Geophysical Inc., Engelwood, Colo. It is valued at $20 million, part of which is subject to cancellation provisions.

Surveying is to begin next month using a new MRX System II equipment 3-D Geophysical just acquired from Input/Output Inc. A prime target will be BP's Northstar prospect.

In addition, 3-D Geophysical is conducting transition zone work for ARCO Alaska Inc. in Alaska's Cook Inlet and holds a contract from Marathon Oil Co. for a 3D survey on the state's Kenai Peninsula to start early in 1997.
