Occidental Petroleum Corp. has signed a production-sharing agreement with Qatar's state-owned Qatar General Petroleum Corp. to develop Idd El Shargi South Dome (ISSD) oil field off Qatar.

Oxy plans to spend at least $400 million on the project during the next 5 years.

Horizontal completion methods used in the development of nearby Idd el Shargi North Dome (ISND) reservoirs will be applied to ISSD. Oxy will drill 36 wells from three platforms, including 21 producers, 13 injectors, and two water-disposal wells.

The company also will lay two pipelines, one for oil and one for gas. The pipelines will connect ISSD to the processing facilities on the main ISND production platform.

Gross production is expected to reach 50,000 b/d. Oxy's net interest is about 44%.

Area operations

The field is 15 miles from ISND oil field that Oxy has operated since late 1994.

ISSD has 1.1 billion bbl of oil in place and gross recoverable reserves of 200-300 million bbl.

Oxy will operate ISSD as a satellite of ISND, which will keep overall per-unit operating costs lower.

Since Oxy became operator of ISND, production has increased from about 20,000 b/d in 1994 to more than 100,000 b/d currently and is expected to reach more than 160,000 b/d in 1999.
