Chevron Corp. has signed a 5-year exploration and production sharing agreement (PSA) with Qatar General Petroleum Corp. to explore for hydrocarbons on the Qatar peninsula.

Block 2 comprises 10,900 sq km and lies east of giant Dukhan oil field and south of supergiant North Dome gas field.

Under the PSA, Chevron holds a 100% interest in the block and will conduct 2D and 3D seismic surveys this year. Exploration drilling will follow in 1999. Chevron was awarded the Qatari offshore Block 1NW in 1996. As operator of this block, Chevron plans to drill two oil prospects based on the evaluation of its 3D and 2D seismic surveys. Qatar has signed nine offshore PSAs covering an 18,400-sq km area with companies including Maersk AS, Elf Aquitaine, Wintershall AG, MOL Rt., ARCO, and Pennzoil Co.
