Chevron Shipping Co. has christened Chevron Atlantic, the newest addition to its tanker fleet.
Chevron Atlantic, christened at Chiba, Japan, will serve Chevron's trade between the West Coast of Africa and the U.S. East Coast. On each voyage it will carry about 1 million bbl crude oil to Chevron's 175,000 b/d Philadelphia refinery.
With the addition of this 137,000 dwt tanker, Chevron's owned and controlled fleet stands at 41.
Chevron Atlantic, built by Mitsui Shipbuilding & Engineering, is the first double hull tanker completed for Chevron after passage of the U.S. Oil Pollution Act of 1990. It brings to six the number of double hull vessels in the Chevron fleet. The company has operated the other five along the U.S. Coast since the mid-1970s.
Chevron's 'current building program includes contracts for six more double hull tankers to be delivered between October 1992 and the end of 1994.
They are part of a fleet retirement and renewal program that started in 1990. Five new vessels, including the Chevron Atlantic, are in operation for Chevron under the program. They have replaced older vessels sold by Chevron during the past 4 years.
