Amplitude Energy confirms gas-bearing reservoir in Otway basin

A recent well in the Otway basin encountered a gas-bearing interval in the Waarre C reservoir, with a gross gas zone of at least 60 m and high-quality net pay. Further testing will determine commercial viability.

Key Highlights

  • The Juliet-1 well penetrated the primary Waarre C reservoir.
  • The well recorded elevated gas readings.
  • Results are consistent with pre-drill expectations, but commercial viability remains to be confirmed.

Amplitude Energy Ltd. discovered gas in the Juliet-1 exploration and development well in Otway basin permit VIC/L24 offshore southeast Australia.

The gas-bearing reservoir's commercial potential remains unconfirmed. The company intends to collect pressure and sample data from wireline logging operations to inform resource volume estimates and determine initial gas composition. Results will guide a decision on whether to complete the Juliet-1 well, the company said.

The well’s 8 ½-in. hole section penetrated the primary Waarre C reservoir target and reached 2,299 m TVDSS. Preliminary drilling and logging data recorded elevated gas readings in the Waarre C reservoir (intersected at 2,129 m TVDSS). These gas peaks coincide with elevated resistivity readings observed on logging while drilling (LWD) tools, consistent with probable hydrocarbon presence.

The Waarre C sandstone exhibits a gross gas-bearing interval of at least 60 m, which includes 49 m of interpreted high-quality net pay in line with other Waarre C reservoirs in offset fields. The gas water contact is currently interpreted as being below TD. Results to date are in-line with pre-drill expectations of reservoir quality and thickness.

Otway basin is about 500 km long and covers 155,000 sq km from Cape Jaffa in South Australia to northwest Tasmania. About 80% of the basin is offshore and 20% onshore. In March 2026, Amplitude Energy deemed an Isabella field prospect non-commercial in permit VIC/L24 after discovering gas in the prospect.

Amplitude Energy is operator in VIC/L24 (50%) with O.G. Energy holding the remaining 50% interest.
