Turkish Petroleum advances Sakarya gas field phase three development with additional contracts
Key Highlights
- TPAO has awarded additional contracts for additional development of Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea.
- Phase 3 involves a new floating production unit, 27 wells, and a 183-km export pipeline connecting offshore fields to the onshore Filyos infrastructure.
- Saipem’s scope includes EPCI of flowlines and pipelines.
- Baker Hughes will supply subsea systems, including deepwater trees and control systems.
Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) and Turkish Petroleum Offshore Technology Center (TP-OTC) let additional contracts for work on the third phase of the Sakarya gas field development project.
Sakarya lies about 170 km offshore the western Black Sea in Block AR/TPO/KD/C26-C27-D26-D27 in 2,150 m of water. It is Türkiye’s largest-ever natural gas discovery and contains 405 billion cu m (bcm) proven gas reserves. It was discovered in August 2020 and is being developed in three phases by TPAO.
The third phase of development entails a new dedicated floating production unit (FPU), fed by 27 wells in Sakarya and Amasra fields, connected by a new trunkline to the onshore infrastructure in Filyos, on the Turkish Black Sea coast.
Saipem
The company recently let an engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract to Saipem for work on the project.
Saipem’s scope of work encompasses EPCI of 8 rigid flowlines and a 183-km, 24-in. diameter gas export pipeline (GEP) connecting the offshore field at a maximum depth of 2,200 m to Filyos.
The duration of the $1.5-billion contract is about 3 years. The offshore campaign will be conducted by Saipem's Castorone pipelay vessel in 2027.
Saipem completed Phase 1 of the Sakarya field development awarded in 2021 and is finalizing activities related to the second phase awarded in 2023.
Baker Hughes
TPAO and TP-OTC let a contract to Baker Hughes to supply subsea production and intelligent completion systems for Sakarya gas field's third development phase.
Baker Hughes will provide deepwater horizontal tree systems with associated subsea structures and control systems to support production at depths from 6,500 to 7,200 ft.
Baker Hughes has collaborated with TPAO and TP-OTC in Sakarya gas field since development began in 2022. The company has worked on reservoir and technology evaluations for the field’s subsurface geology and has provided lower completions solutions suited for production in thin-layered reservoirs like those in the Black Sea, the company said.
Deliveries and execution by Baker Hughes for Sakarya's third phase will begin in late 2025.
Turkish Petroleum Corp. (TPAO) is operator of the field and holds 100% interest.
