LONDON, Mar. 20 -- Algeria's Sonatrach has joined Total SA in exploring onshore Taoudenni permit in Mauritania.

Total will continue to operate the blocks with an 80% stake while Sonatrach will have 20%. The deal, Total said, represented its commitment to developing a relationship with Sonatrach outside of Algeria.

Total has already gathered 3,260 km of 2D seismic data over Blocks Ta7 and Ta8 in the Taoudenni basin, which cover 58,000 sq km.

Mauritania's Ministry of Oil and Mines has approved the transaction.
