Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and DNV have signed an MOU to address carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) deployment. The MOU provides for collaboration in:
• Technical matters including safety, environment, risk, technology. and the qualification of storage sites.
• Legislation, regulation.
• Capability development.
• Commerce.
Petronas earlier this year awarded a consortium led by National Petroleum Construction Co., Abu Dhabi, a front-end engineering and design contract for a 3.7 million tonne/year carbon capture and storage project at Kasawari sour gas field offshore Sarawak, Malaysia (OGJ Online, Apr. 18, 2022). The company has set a goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
DNV’s 2021 Energy Transition Outlook warned that even if all electricity was ‘green’ from its publication date forward, the world would still fall a long way short of achieving 2050 net-zero emissions targets (OGJ Online, Aug. 31, 2021).
