Drilling activity in North America increased this week as additional oil drilling in Canada reversed last week’s decline.

There were 807 rigs drilling in the US and Canada for the week ended Sept. 25, up 15 from last week, Baker Hughes officials reported Friday.

Additional oil-directed rigs working in Canada drove the increase. There were 208 rigs working in Canada this week, an 11-rig increase from last week. The additional rigs were all oil-directed, bringing the week’s total to 145. There were 62 rigs drilling for gas in Canada this week, unchanged from last week.

There were 595 rigs drilling in the US and its waters, up 4 units from the previous week. The count is 50 units higher than this time last year. The number of rigs drilling on land increased by 3 to end the week at 588. There were 3 rigs drilling in inland waters, unchanged from last week. One additional rig was drilling offshore, increasing the total number of rigs working to 8.

One additional rigs was drilling for gas in the US this week, bringing the weekly total to 135. There were 455 units drilling for oil this week, up32 from last week. Nine rigs were unclassified, unchanged from last week.

For the second week running, New Mexico added 3 rigs, bringing this week’s count to 98. Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Utah each added a single unit to bring respective rig counts to 52, 16, and 15.

Texas dropped 2 rigs to end the week with 281 rigs working. The count is 25 more than this time last year.
