While Canada’s rig count is up week-over-week, the count is down 19 from the 217 rigs working this time last year. This week, the increase in rigs is attributable to oil-directed rigs, which increased by 7 to reach a count of 136. Gas-directed rigs in Canada decreased by 2 units from this time last week.

In the US, a 1-unit increase helped offset last week’s 2-unit drop. A total 548 rigs are working in the US and its waters this week.

US oil-directed rigs were unchanged from last week at 418 rigs working. That total is down 64 units from this time in 2024. Gas-directed rigs increased by 1 unit to 121. A year ago, 99 units were drilling for gas in the US.

The number of rigs drilling on land in the US was down 1 unit to 528, which is 38 fewer than this time last year. Horizontal rigs increased by 6 units to 486. Vertical rigs were down 1 unit from last week. The number of rigs drilling directionally was down 4 to 51.

New Mexico and Oklahoma each added 2 rigs, ending the week with respective counts of 102 and 42. Colorado added a rig. Its count now stands at 15. The largest decrease in rigs was in Louisiana. With a total of 37 rigs working, the count is 1-unit fewer than the prior week. Texas and Wyoming each dropped a single unit to reach respective counts of 237 and 12.

The number of rigs working offshore US increased by 2 to 17. The number of units working in US inland waters was unchanged at 3.
