OMV Offshore Bulgaria drills dry hole in Han Asparuh
OMV Offshore Bulgaria GmbH, 100%-owned by OMV Petrom, drilled a dry hole in Han Asparuh Block 1-21 in the Bulgarian Black Sea, partner NewMed Energy said in a release Feb. 4.
The well was drilled in the Vinekh prospect and reached a final depth of about 3,230 m subsea. Non-significant natural gas shows were encountered in the target formations.
OMV is continuing to conduct well-site analyses. The partnership will report once the operator provides an update regarding the completion of its evaluation.
An additional exploration well in the Krum prospect will target different geological units from those of the Vinekh prospect. The well is expected to spud in the coming weeks, with an estimated drilling duration of about 2 months.
Han Asparuh is an exploration block in the Western Black Sea in Bulgaria, South of the Neptun block in Romania, and has an area of 13,712 sq km with water depths slightly below 2,000 m. Exploration activities started in 2012 and included geological and geophysical surveys and the drilling of three exploration wells. An extensive 3D seismic campaign was finalized in May 2020 to identify potential drilling targets.
OMV owns 45% of the Han Asparuh license with partners NewMed Energy (45%) and Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH)(10%).
