1989 U.S. DRILLING OFF 12.8%

The American Petroleum Institute reports U.S. oil and gas well completions dropped 12.8% last year. API tallied 28,804 completions for 1989, of which 10,446 were oil wells, 9,610 were gas wells, and 8,748 were dry. That compares with 13,582 oil wells, 8,789 gas wells, and 10,670 dry holes drilled in 1988. Total footage was 130.689 million, down 16.8%. In 1989 operators drilled 23,555 development wells9,904 oil, 8,953 gas, and 4,698 dry. Development footage was 101.212 million, down 15% from 1988.
