Equinor Energy AS has exercised its option for use of Odfjell Drilling Ltd.'s Deepsea Atlantic semisubmersible drilling rig. The operator will drill five additional wells for Johan Sverdrup Phase 2 development in the North Sea.
In July 2020, Equinor and partners signed a letter of intent with Odfjell Drilling for the rig to drill 12 wells as part of the field's second phase of development (OGJ Online, July 7, 2020).
Drilling of the additional wells, valued by the service provider at $64 million, is expected to take about 190 days, extending the rig's backlog into first-quarter 2024.
Johan Sverdrup is the third largest oil field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, with expected recoverable reserves of 2.7 billion boe. Powered from shore, emissions during the field life are estimated at less than 0.7kg CO2 per produced bbl.
Equinor is operator of the license with 42.6267%. Partners are ABP Norway AS (20%), Petoro AS (17.36%), Aker BP ASA (11.5733%), and Total E&P Norge AS (8.44%).
