Tethys Oil commenced drilling operations of exploration well Thameen-1 in the northern part of Block 49 at Marsudad village in the Wilayat of Muqhsin.

The onshore block covers 15,439 sq km south west of the Sultanate of Oman within the Governate of Dhofar. Tethys, through wholly owned subsidiary Tethys Oil Montasar Ltd., let a contract to Abraj Energy Services SAOC for use of the Abraj-204 drilling rig.

The well is to be drilled to 4,000 m targeting the Late Ordovician Hasirah sandstone layer at 3,500 m TVD. The Mid-Ordovician Saih Nihayda sandstone at 3,700 m TVD is the secondary target. The well also will investigate the shallower Gharif sandstone.

Drilling operations are expected to last about 45 days.

Tethys Oil Montasar Ltd. is operator (50%). EOG Resources Inc. agreed to a 50% farm in in November 2020 (OGJ Online, Nov. 10, 2020).
