Hydrates delay Erskine field restart

Formation of gas hydrates has delayed restart of Erskine gas and condensate field in the UK North Sea, where production was suspended on Jan. 16 because of a blocked condensate pipeline. Serica Energy PLC, an 18% partner, said a new 26-km section of pipeline has been laid between the Lomond platform, to which Erskine production flows, and a link with the Forties Pipeline System.

During commissioning of the repaired system, hydrates formed in the production line between Erskine and Lomond.

Serica said Chevron Corp., the operator, is injecting methanol and slowly depressurizing the line. It said no major delay is expected.

Erskine production last year averaged 36 MMscfd of gas and 5,153 b/d of oil, according to the UK Oil and Gas Authority.

Chevron holds a 50% interest in Erskine. Chrysaor, the Lomond operator, has 32%.
