In what OMV AG is calling the largest seismic campaign in Austria, the operator will shoot 600 sq km of 3D seismic in the winter months of 2018. The exploration effort will analyze the subsurface at depths of 4,000-6,000 m for potential natural gas deposits. The seismic area stretches over the majority of the Marchfeld basin between the Eastern Alps and the Carpathian Mountains from northeast of Vienna through northeast Schonkirchen.

OMV last year drilled 12 wells in the Weinviertal area of Lower Austria, which is in northeastern Austria (OGJ Online, Sept. 29, 2016). The company said Austrian oil and gas production averaged 32,000 boe/d in 2015.

The company covers about 10% of Austria’s natural gas consumption. Austria’s demand is 8 billion cu m/year for manufacturing, power generation, and traffic and transport services.
