OMV and Borealis are exploring ways to chemically recycle plastic waste into plastics feedstock at the refining and petrochemical site they share at Schwechat, Austria.

The joint effort would involve a pilot plant in operation at OMV’s 194,000 b/d refinery, which has an integrated petrochemical plant feeding Borealis’s polyolefins manufacturing operation.

The OMV ReOil pilot produces as much as 100 kg/hr of synthetic crude from waste plastic for reuse in the refinery. The product can be used as fuel or plastic feedstock, OMV says.

The company plans to increase the pilot plant’s capacity once more before expanding it to industrial scale.

Borealis now recycles plastic mechanically.
