Pipe leak spills oil in Brazil's Iguacu River

An estimated 4 million l. of crude oil leaked from an oil pipeline at Petroleo Brasileiro SA's refinery at Araucaria, near Curitiba, the capital of Parana state. The spill began Sunday afternoon and polluted the Iguacu river.


RIO DE JANEIRO�An estimated 4 million l. of crude oil leaked from an oil pipeline at Petroleo Brasileiro SA's refinery at Araucaria, near Curitiba, the capital of Parana state. The spill began Sunday afternoon and polluted the Iguacu River.

The oil slick has spread more than 8 km, reported local radio station CBN. Emergency personnel are working to avoid pollution of other rivers.

The pipeline transports crude oil from the Sa� Francisco port in Santa Catarina state to the refinery at Araucaria. Petrobras technicians are travelling to the site from Rio de Janeiro.

There is no information available about the extent of environmental damage. So far, Petrobras has declined to release details about the spill.
