API REPORT LISTS REFINERY CLOSINGS
Between 1981 and 1989, 134 U.S. refineries, with a combined capacity of 2,493,988 b/d, were shut down, a new survey by the API reveals.
These closures were partially offset by the reactivation of 32 refineries that had previously been shut down, the survey noted.
According to the report, the number of refineries declined in all of the nation's five refinery districts. District 3, which includes Texas and Louisiana, had the most closings-57.
District 1, the East Coast, and District 4, the Rocky Mountain region, had the fewest closings-13 each.
During the period, the largest facility to be shut down was a 190,000 b/d Dow Chemical Co. refinery in Freeport, Tex. Four other refineries with capacities in excess of 100,000 b/d were also shut down.
