International Petroleum Ltd. (IPL), Dubai, will place Bukha gas/condensate field off Oman on production following an agreement that allows gas exports from Oman to Ras al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

The field, in the Persian Gulf at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, 9.3 miles off the west coast of the Musandam Peninsula, holds 200 bcf of reserves in two reservoirs, Thamama and Mauddud.

In its initial development phase Bukha will produce 40 MMcfd of gas, 5,000 b/d of condensate, and 800 b/d of LPG.

Gas and condensate will move through a 21.7 mile pipeline to the Khor Khwair gas processing plant in Ras al Khaimah, which has a condensate unit, LPG facilities, and a tanker export terminal. It was built to handle production from the offshore Saleh oil and gas field.

Bukha gas will be sold in the Ras al Khaimah household market, and condensate will be exported from the tanker terminal. LPG will be trucked to Dubai.

Three existing wells in the field will be completed and produced through a small platform. Engineering for the project is expected to be complete by yearend, and production is expected within 12 months of the start of platform fabrication early in 1992.

IPL said Bukha is capable of producing substantially larger volumes of gas if a market can be found. It is currently studying the market in Dubai.

There are several other prospects in the area, including the Bukha West field which extends into Iranian waters where it is known as Henjam.

Iran recently has shown interest in developing fields in this part of the Persian Gulf. IPL said it has been discussing with Iran a possible joint development of West Bukha/Henjam.

IPL has a 47.25% interest in Bukha and holds a further 2.75% in trust for Cluff Oil Ltd. The remaining 50% is held by Transworld Oil Ltd.
