The US Department of Energy on Feb. 26 granted approval to Cheniere Energy Inc. to expand exports from its Corpus Christi LNG plant.

The new authorization permits additional imports of up to 470,000 Mcf/d (12%) to non-Free Trade Agreement countries from Trains 8 and 9 of the Corpus Christi Stage 3 project, also known as Corpus Christi Liquefaction (CCL) Midscale 8-9. The order brings total export authorization to 4.45 bcfd, making the plant the US’s second-largest LNG export project.

“This order helps further strengthen America’s LNG export capacity, delivering peace abroad and prosperity for Americans at home,” said Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who announced the permit during a site visit.

Cheniere began exporting from Corpus Christi LNG in 2018. It announced a positive final investment decision (FID) to proceed with the expansion, using Bechtel Energy Inc. for construction, in June 2025.
